How to Break the Cycle of Giving Up Too Soon
Do you feel like you always give up too soon? Or maybe you make progress and then something happens that causes you to lose momentum and you have to start all over again.
There is a reason for this.
It can feel disheartening and you lose all hope.
You might just say to yourself, “I tried and it didn’t work.” Or “I’ve been trying for years and nothing ever works.”
But there is a real reason for this, and it’s something our brains do naturally. Once you are aware of it, you can finally shift the pattern.
The brain naturally adapts to perceived limits, even if these limits aren’t real or permanent.
Have you ever heard the story of how baby elephants are trained?
The trainers place a heavy chain on their leg that stops them from running away or going too far outside of their zone.
When they move too far outside the zone, the chain reminds them that they are stuck inside. They can’t move outside the zone.
The chain remains as they grow, limiting the elephant and stopping it from ever leaving its comfort zone.
But as the elephant grows, the chain becomes weak and tiny compared to the enormous size, power and strength of a full-grown elephant. The chain is no longer tied to the ground. At this point it is just a like a string around the elephant’s leg.
But by this time, it’s too late. The powerful elephant still feels the restriction that was placed on its leg as a baby, but it feels it as a reminder of its limits. The elephant no longer believes in its own power.
Humans are like this. We try, but when we hit a wall or barrier in the form of “failure” or an embarrassment and the chain is formed forever.
Real growth happens when you stop giving up and push past the “zone” or the wall of your perceived limitations. And this wall is different for everyone.
Real growth happens when you keep going and stop giving up, especially when it hasn’t worked out before.
Keep going! The chain isn’t real. Your limits aren’t real.
