How to Be Confident: In 3 Simple Steps

If you wanted to become more confident in three steps, these 3 steps would be the most simple:

1. Decide you will learn something new.

2. Decide you will allow yourself to feel the discomfort of growth, no matter what it takes.

3. Decide you are committed to practicing everything it takes to learn the “something new.”

It might be that simple, but its almost NEVER that easy.

But if you want the real version, it would involve at least 19 steps, that look like this:

1. Decide you want to do/learn/be something new.

2. Plan and try to do it perfectly.

3. Get stuck in inaction and self-doubt, due to perfectionism, “not-enoughness,” and imposter syndrome. (Which are all natural fears when you set out into the unknown).

4. Finally get tired of being stuck.

5. Try-1st attempt.

6. It doesn’t go perfectly. Retreat back into stuckness, fear and self-doubt.

7. Get tired of being stuck again/still.

8. Try again. (Repeat steps 4-8 multiple times, or just once).

9. Decide to do it imperfectly instead.

10. Retreat back to step 5-8 and repeat as many times as necessary until moving on to step 11. Or move directly to step 11.

11. Feel the discomfort fully. (possibly repeat steps 4-10 again depending on your level of resistance to feeling discomfort).

12. Keep feeling discomfort & keep moving forward, even with various levels of self-doubt.

13. Embrace the discomfort. Start noticing how the discomfort isn’t as bad as you imagined it to be. (Example: Other people’s opinions and judgments aren’t as bad as your own self judgment).

14. Take bolder actions. Fail. Feel discomfort. But start enjoying it.

15. Success milestone! But feel discomfort associated with success. Possibly retreat for a moment or longer.

16. Practice feeling the discomfort and start learning to be ok with it.

17. Be ok with discomfort so much you start to like it.

18. Start enjoying the challenge and discomfort of growth so much you start seeking it out in other areas.

19. Look back and see that self-doubt + trying something new+ feeling the discomfort+ not giving up+ practice =CONFIDENCE.
