1. Stop criticizing yourself
This might seem irrelevant or too simple, but most people have criticizing thoughts that are running their minds and don’t even realize it. Do you?
You might not even notice these critical thoughts at first. It could be something as simple as thinking “why am I always running late!?” Or, the most common sneaky self-critical thought of “I am not enough.”
Start paying attention to these self-critical thoughts and turn them around when you catch them.
2. Stop trying to control others
Trying to control others is another thing that many people do without realizing it. Trying to control others can be people pleasing behaviors, trying to be impressive, withholding information, or by not telling the full truth to someone because you don’t want them to get upset.
By “controlling others,” I mean the attempt to control other people’s feelings, opinions, and thoughts about you. It is exhausting and also nobody wants to be controlled. But this is what happens when you go around trying to protect yourself by controlling how others see you.
Whenever you try to protect yourself from what others might think of you, you’re trying to control them. And this can be exhausting. It also puts a barrier between you and the other person that blocks connection.
Self protection blocks connections. So remember this if you want connection with someone but are trying to make sure they only see you in a certain way. This is also the root of imposter syndrome and perfectionism.
3. Acknowledge someone for something you see in them.
When you notice something you admire about a person, reach out and tell them. Most people are under-acknowledged in life, and genuine acknowledgement can spread love and kindness in meaningful ways that we don’t even realize. And by remembering to focus on this, you will create more connection in your life, which changes everything.
