You Can Only be in the Flow When Your Nervous System is Calm

How does a regulated nervous system impact your ability to be in an intuitive flow state?

You can’t hear your intuition (as well) if your nervous system is dysregulated. This means if you are experiencing the chronic effects of stress, fight or flight, people pleasing, or the fear of missing out (FOMO).

So, what does this mean, exactly?

When you are experiencing a lot of stress, shame, or trauma responses, that stress energy will get trapped in your body and make you feel stuck. This trapped or stuck energy can show up as illness, tight muscles or fascia, a clenched jaw or teether grinding, headaches, etc.

You might even wake up at night with panic attacks or insomnia, which carry into the next day, building a cycle of exhaustion and stress.

What does this have to do with intuition?

Well, when you are stuck in this physical cycle of trapped stress energy and exhaustion, it can take a toll on your day-to-day life. You won’t be able to hear your intuition as clearly, and life will feel hard. It will feel harder to relax into “the flow.”

What is “the flow?”

The flow is when you feel calm, peaceful and centered. Your nervous system is relaxed and intuitive ideas flow to you. You start noticing signs, synchronicities, opportunities and connections that you may have missed when you are stuck in the stress response. It’s like the things you want and need come to you easily when you’re in the flow, and you feel more at ease to follow your inner guidance to pursue new opportunities.

You’ll get more intuitive guidance in the flow state. It’s not that you can’t have intuitive guidance when you’re stressed, its just harder to access it clearly when your system is blocked by stuck stress.

So, if you want to start living more in the flow and tune in to your intuition, here’s how to start taking care of your nervous system so you can be relaxed enough to receive it.

1. Notice your physical stress.

  • Where are you feeling signs of stress in your body?

  • Is your breathing shallow?

  • Are your muscles tense? Do you have tense areas of fascia throughout your body?

2. Try to physically remove the trapped stress.

  • Get a massage

  • Go swimming or take a relaxing bath or shower.

  • Go for a long walk

Your body needs to physically release the trapped stress first. This isn’t something you can think your way out of when your body is holding on to the stress energy. Once you release it physically, you’ll be able to start tuning into your intuition and your flow.
