The Discomfort of Growth
The Discomfort of Growth
Did you know that you can do, achieve, get or accomplish pretty much anything you want, as long as you’re willing to feel the discomfort of the growth that it takes to get it?
But most people avoid the discomfort of growth in exchange for the discomfort of staying stuck.
If you don’t like your job or career, you could go through the discomfort of applying +interviewing +getting rejected+ feeling like there is nobody hiring right now + feeling defeated, then repeating the process until you find your right position.
OR you could just stay where you are and feel the discomfort of dissatisfaction.
If you don’t like being an employee, you could decide to start your own business. Starting a business will make you feel the discomfort of uncertainty and not knowing if your plan will really work out, you will have to feel the discomfort of learning new concepts and skills, being visible instead of being able to hide, and the discomfort of not having a steady paycheck from an employer.
Or you could chose to stay in the discomfort of having to follow the rules of being an employee.
If you are unhappy in your relationship you could decide to feel the discomfort of having open, honest and potentially painful conversations that will get to the root of the issues, and potentially come to a resolution or an ending to the relationship, where you would have to feel the discomfort of separation.
OR you could decide to keep tolerating the discomfort of dissatisfaction.
If you don’t like your health situation, you could decide to feel the discomfort of changing your habits which can be very uncomfortable for a while, but will lead to positive changes.
Or you can decide to stay in the discomfort of your current situation.
The truth is, there is discomfort in growth and when you are stuck, you are avoiding a particular flavor of discomfort.
But, on the other side of discomfort, is your new identity. This new identity is the person who decided to go through the discomfort of learning the skills that the stuck person did not yet know. Your new identity was only formed by going through the discomfort that would take you to what you want. The only way is through.
Where in your life are you feeling dissatisfied? In order to make a change, what discomfort are you avoiding?
