What if Life is Just a Big School for Spiritual Growth?
Have you ever wondered what the purpose of life is? Have you ever thought that it has to be more than just being born into your body, going through the stages of being a baby, childhood, and then young adulthood, just to figure out what kind of work you need to do to survive and then maybe buy stuff if you make enough money?
Of course, there’s more to it than that! But sometimes I think we forget who we really are.
I believe that we all born to learn something very important. The way I picture it is, it’s like we are all in this Life Academy or something for spiritual growth. I’ve heard similar theories about this before, but I also feel like this is something I’ve sensed since I was a small child.
When I was about one and a half years old, I remember thinking that I was new to life. I was highly aware that I was a new person in a new body and that I was at the very beginning of my life, here to learn all about things the world has to offer.
I wasn’t raised with religion, but around the age of three I had a vivid dream that I was playing in my sandbox, which was my very favorite place to play and get dirty, and I looked up and this person was hovering above my sandbox. This person came to introduce themself to me and told me they were God and would be taking care of me for my life.
I have always had vivid dreams, and this dream was so detailed and real that the next morning as my mom was feeding me breakfast, I asked her, “Who is God?”
She was surprised because she had never brought up the topic of God to me before, so she wasn’t sure if I learned about it on TV or if someone had told me something. But, I remember her being surprised that I would ask the question.
And ever since that moment, (and probably before), I knew and trusted that God was “taking care of me,” just as he said he would in my sandbox dream.
I won’t go into too much personal detail here, but I do believe that my sense of knowing that I was taken care of is what helped me through some very tough times as a child. Life was not easy for me and my situation had some pain and trauma, just like all lives have, but the one place I could always go was God. I knew that God was taking care of me. I knew because I felt it and I remembered my dream. I had that connection and I felt the certainty no matter what. And that sense of knowing was often the only thing that kept me strong.
So, Who Are You?
It is my belief that we all are here to learn, grow, love and expand.
Life makes more sense when we can look at it as a story, from start to finish, with a plot, characters, and main themes. There are lessons which show up in the form of patterns that you repeat until you learn what lesson you need to know to move to the next level in your growth.
If you look at the beginning of your story, you might start off with some of the lessons your parents did or didn’t learn, or that your grandparents passed on to your parents. Generational themes or traumas could have been passed on to you.
Everything in your life, every relationship, event, and circumstance can be used and learned from as if it was your own curriculum in the Life Academy. You can use anything that has ever happened to you for your growth, IF you are able to dissect it and pick out the threads of meaning that make sense to you.
Which Life Perspective Makes More Sense?
I was recently listening to a coaching podcast that I listen to and love and the host said something that made me realize this perspective is different. She said something like this “Life is chaos, and we have to learn how to manage it and respond to it.”
I agree with this to some extent, because if we learn how to self-regulate our emotions we can come from a place of power and respond rather than just reacting out of stress and fear. I feel like that is a great start, but we can take it a step farther, a step deeper.
But when we look at life beyond the surface layer, of just something to respond or react to, we can see that everything holds meaning. We can look back and see that everything that has happened and all the challenges held a clue. Everything holds a lesson if you slow down and examine it with curiosity. Its more than just responding or reacting to chaos. When you look at it this way, things aren’t negative and positive. They are all clues for your greater good.
Life will guide us and teach us everything we need to know if we let it. And this isn’t about dismissing or bypassing very real pain and feelings. It’s about feeling the feelings, responding and then taking it a step further and using it all for the next steps in growth and expansion.
